Blog Archive Northwestern University (Kellogg) Essay Analysis, 2008-2009

Blog Archive Northwestern University (Kellogg) Essay Analysis, 2008-2009 With Harvard Business School scaling back to four essays (from five in 2007 and six in 2006) and Stanford making a similar reduction (its main essay has “shrunk” from a seven-page limit two years ago to a 750-word limit today), Kellogg now demands the most in terms of volume of writing required to complete an application. The minimization of such demands at other schools seems to have a great deal to do with rising application volumes and overtaxed admissions staffs. So, Kellogg’s Admissions Committee might be lauded for taking on such a challenging task. Last year, Kellogg made the first major changes to its essays in years. This year, it has merely tweaked essays 3 and 4, with essays 1 and 2 remaining longstanding, traditional questions.   All applicants are required to answer questions 1, 2 and 3 in addition to two of the essays in question 4. For questions 1-3, please limit responses to 2 pages. 1: Briefly assess your career progress to date.   Elaborate on your future career plans and your motivation for pursuing a graduate degree at Kellogg. Because Personal Statements are similar from one application to the next, we have produced the “MBA Mission Personal Statement Guide.” We offer this guide to candidates free of charge, via our online store.   Please feel free to download your copy today.   For additional information on the  Kellogg experience, please consult the MBA Mission Insiders Guide series. 2: Describe how your background, values, academics, activities and/or leadership skills will enhance the experience of other Kellogg students. This essay is broad and sweeping in nature, so it allows you to strategically showcase a mix of your greatest strengthsâ€"professional, community, academic and personal. You should strive to select a diversity of experiences and present them in such a way that you will be able to relate them back to your ability to contribute to Kellogg in a variety of areas, such as the classroom, your study group and/or the community at large. A successful essay will be one that not only details unique personal strengths, but also clearly illustrates how these strengths will be put into action at Kelloggâ€"meaning that you will have an opportunity to show your intimate understanding of and connection to the school. Please see our Monday Morning Essay Tip: Your Contribution. 3: Describe your key leadership experiences and evaluate what leadership areas you hope to develop through your MBA experience. Because essay two is so open-ended, you will need to carefully consider how and where to “spread” your stories. In essay 3, you must discuss your leadership experiences (note: “experiences” is plural), so you will have to “save” certain stories for this essay and not expend all of your ideas in this area in essay 2. You might offer two simple vignettes that showcase your leadership via a narrative, then evaluate yourself and illustrate certain areas for development. Although you are expected to be critical in discussing these areas for development, you should not deride your existing skills. Rather than thinking about ways in which you are lacking as a leader, you should focus on true opportunities to become a more complete and capable one. Again, in this essay (much as in essay 2), specific reference is made to your MBA experience. In answering this question, you should seize the opportunity to create a connection between yourself and Kellogg by showing that you understa nd how the school’s resources will facilitate your development as a leader. Choose two of the following three essays… 4. Applicants must answer two of the below essays.   (Re-applicants must answer question 4D and one other essay).   Please keep responses to two paragraphs.   4A Describe a time when you had to motivate a reluctant individual or group. Because of space limitations, starting this essay in a detailed and descriptive way is essential to conveying the intensity of the experienceâ€"to essentially paint a picture of the situation’s troubled dynamics. You will then need to transition quickly and analyze the actions you took to diplomatically navigate the situation and motivate the seemingly immovable individual or group. Your goal is to ensure that as the Admissions reader completes this essay, he/she understands both that you exercised sound judgment and discretion and how you did so. Implicitly, the reader should be able to extrapolate that as part of a study group at Kellogg, you would be an effective facilitator and leaderâ€" one who legitimately cares about others’ contributions, even when those others are reluctant to contribute. 4B   I wish the Admissions Committee had asked me….. This essay is essentially an open invitation to present anything vital about yourselfâ€"compelling stories or differentiatorsâ€"that you have not otherwise been able to showcase. Basically, you could not ask for a better opportunity to explain to the Admissions Committee how you are unique. Many candidates use this essay to discuss a particular hobby or interest. If this is your choice as well, your inordinate passion for the activity in question must be fully and clearly expressedâ€"otherwise, this window into your life will be boring and unconvincing. Ask yourself, “How can I show that I take this passion further than others?” This essay should not be a fallback option you choose because you have run out of creative ideas. Rather, it should allow you to offer your reader something exceptional about yourself and add depth of character to your application. 4C What do others admire about you? This essay challenges the notion that MBA candidates must remain humble and let their actions talk for them. If you choose to answer this question, be very careful not to brag or display arrogance. You will need to show that you have truly excelled in a certain area or way and ideally show “proof” of others’ admiration of you, perhaps by including a well-placed quote or referencing an award you have received. In general, we recommend that candidates tread carefully in this space. The line between displaying a favorable trait and offending others with a lack of self-awareness is a fine oneâ€"and easily crossed. To be honest, we are surprised that this question is offered as a choice. 4D For re-applicants only: Since your previous application, what are the steps you’ve taken to strengthen your candidacy? Whether you have improved your academic record, received a promotion, begun a new and exciting project, increased your community involvement or taken on a personal challenge of sorts, the key to this essay is conveying a very deliberate path of achievement. Kellogg wants to know that you have been actively striving to improve, and that you have seized opportunities during the previous year to do so, because a Kellogg MBA is vital to you. This essay question will vary greatly from one candidate to the next, as each person’s needs and experiences will differ. We are more than happy to provide one-on-one assistance with this highly personal essay to ensure that the above requirements are met. Share ThisTweet Blogroll

Welfare Policy And The American Government - 1162 Words

Welfare Policy Lana Eliot Sociology 320 Professor Mentor March 26, 2016 When a person first hears the word welfare, they think of free money, food and lazy people. This is such a stereotyped opinion of all that the welfare system is and what it does for millions of individuals and families in the United States. To socially define welfare one could view it as a: social effort designed to promote the basic physical and material well-being of people in need† (dictionary.com). Because there are so many different views on welfare the American government has attempted to create a welfare policy for all Americans to follow and acknowledge. But who or what defined happiness? Who makes the decision on what Americans are considered to be in need? Federal, state, and local governments have implemented guidelines to answer these very questions, but like many policies in America there is ridicule and controversy. Welfare has become an issue here in America. There are many unanswered questions from who is eligible, to how long a person or family can receive be nefits. The welfare system that we have today is far from perfect and many people feel there need to be a lot of changes made to it so it is implemented to better serve a bigger variety of Americans. Bush Essay Example For Students

Bush Essay George Bush is not content with the United States being the top dog. His snarling at one international accord after another besmirches the United States and makes the world a more dangerous place. When Bush nixed at the ABM treaty, the comprehensive test ban treaty, the biological weapons protocol, and the small-arms convention, he sent an unmistakable signal that the United States doesnt care about arms control. This will only encourage other nations to bolster their own arsenals, and the arms race will accelerate on every track. And when Bush led the United States out of the Kyoto accord on global warming, he turned Washington into a laughingstock, with 178 nations on one side and the United States on the other. By not requiring U.S. companies, which produce a huge chunk of the worlds carbon dioxide, to curb their emissions, Bush showed a reckless disregard for the environmental health of the planet. Like many know-nothings, Bush believes the United States is better than any other country. Theyre foreigners; what do they know? So what if 178 nations disagree with us? Weve got the Holy Grail. Were so different from all these other nations that our interests cant possibly coincide with theirs. After returning from Europe on his first trip, he bragged to Peggy Noonan, his dads speechwriter, that he stood down more than twenty leaders (no matter they were our allies) so he could stand up for America. Bush also has Kissingers phobia: the morbid fear that other countries will drag U.S. soldiers or statesmen to The Hague or elsewhere for prosecution. Belgium is already trying to get its hands on Kissinger, and Bush wants to make sure that Americans elude any court outside our borders. The one job Bush takes seriously is that of chief executive of the corporate class. Boeing, Lockheed, and Philip Morris want to be able ply their wares without interference from any international body, so Bush undercuts those bodies at every opportunity. The World Health Organization, for instance, is trying to get countries to sign on to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which would, among other things, limit advertising, raise cigarette taxes, eliminate subsidies, and consider the possibility of expanding the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice so that tobacco companies could be tried for crimes against humanity. Tobacco killed four million people last year, according to the World Health Organization, which predicts that ten million people a year will die by 2030, with most of those coming from the developing nations. The Bush Administration has tried to weaken the framework at every turn, Judith Wilkenfeld of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids told The Wall Street Journal. (Further repaying a campaign debt to the tobacco companies, the Bush Administration has gone to bat for them in South Korea. American trade officials have intervened on behalf of U.S. tobacco companies to stop South Korea from imposing new requirements on foreign firms seeking to sell and manufacture cigarettes in that country, The Washington Post reported. One of those requirements would have been a 40 percent duty on all imported cigarettes. Philip Morris applauded the Bush Administrations move. When it comes to high duties and barriers to our entering markets, we think the U.S. government has a role to play, said Mark Berlin, associate general counsel for the company. U.S. arms manufacturers are equally grateful to the Bush Administration for sabotaging the U.N. effort to regulate the traffic in small arms. In July, more than 170 nations met to impose restrictions on these arms, which include assault rifles, grenade launchers, and shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles. U.S. arms manufacturers are the leading exporters of small arms, accounting for $1.2 billion of the $4 billion annual trade, according to the Swiss-based Small Arms Survey. The United Nations estimates that small arms are used to kill at least half a million people each year, The Washington Post reported. More than 80 percent of the victims are children and women. The U.N. conference wanted to ban personal ownership of military weapons and prohibit governments from selling such weapons to rebel groups. The United States opposed both of those measures. The vast majority of arms transfers in the world are routine and not problematic, said John Bolton, Under Secretary of

How does Shakespeares language demonstrate the conflict between the Capulets and the Montagues in Romeo and Juliet- Act 3 scene 1 Essay Example

How does Shakespeares language demonstrate the conflict between the Capulets and the Montagues in Romeo and Juliet- Act 3 scene 1? Paper In the very first lines of Act 3 Scene 1 the audience are warned that there will be trouble. Benevolio is used as a narrator and to create tension with his speech the day is hot signifying that peoples tempers are short. If we meet we shall not escape a brawl meaning if they meet the Capulets there will be a fight, this gives the audience an insight into what will occur. He also talks about the mad blood stirring explaining everyone is on edge and ready to fight. So all in all everyone is feeling very intense and wants a fight. Tybalt then arrives and Mercutio and he argue, this builds up the tension and sets the scene for the ensuing fight. By my heel. I care not. Mercutio is using the words as a gag, partly to tease Benevolio; partly saying that Tybalts arrival doesnt concern him. Make it a word and a blow. Mercutio is inviting Tybalt to talk but to fight aswell; he is also mocking Tybalt and escalating the fight once again. You will give me occasion. Tybalt is telling Mercutio that he will fight him if need be. This proves there are two characters here that will not back down and want to fight. It also links to Act 1 Scene 1 where Tybalt starts the fight between the Montagues and Capulets; it also links to the party when Tybalt wants to punish Romeo for gatecrashing which also leads to this brawl. Thou consortest with Romeo. Tybalt is just trying to find out where Romeo is and asks Mercutio, who twists it into an insult. This gives the audience an insight into his character revealing quite a manipulative side to him as he twists it into an insult again trying to start a fight. Heres my fiddlestick. Again playing on Tybalts words as minstrels consort and minstrels were entertainers and musicians. It is also another way of saying look heres my sword. This is proven by the lines part fools! and I do but keep the peace. In Act 1 Scene 1 when the two families start fighting and I pray thee, good Mercutio, lets retire. Either withdraw unto some private place or else depart. In Act 3 Scene 1 where he tries to stop Mercutio and Tybalt fighting. Throughout the play Benevolio is the voice of reason and tries to calm down the other characters. Romeo and Tybalt are opposites in the way they act. Romeo on the one hand is passionate and romantic, which is shown in his language. Tybalt on the other hand is very violent and aggressive which is shown in his actions. The language Romeo uses is often poetic and deep. This days black fate, on more days doth depend; This but begins the woe others must end. Which rhymes and Tybalt the reason I have to love thee doth excuse the appertaining rage. His language always remains courteous and poetic even during conflict. Tybalts language is different. Romeo the love I bear thee can afford no better term than this, Thou art a villain. Thou, wretched boy, that didst consort him here, shalt with him hence. He uses very hostile language mixed with some personal insults. His actions also show he is very aggressive as in Act 1 Scene 1 he begins the fight and Act 3 Scene 1 where he kills Mercutio. Mercutio gets really angry when he sees Romeo submitting to Tybalt. O calm, dishonourable, vile submission! Mercutios speech is then filled with very animalistic imagery. Tybalt you rat-catcher, will you walk? This is in reference to Tybalts nickname- Prince of Cats. So Mercutio is mocking Tybalt and trying to lure him into a fight. I think he is truly wants to slay Tybalt because of the quote above, he is actually saying he wants to take Tybalts life. In Shakespeares time a challenge to fight must have been accepted to preserve a mans honour. This is why Mercutio acts as he does, because Romeo is being dishonourable by refusing to fight and Mercutio cannot abide it. Romeo uses very gentlemanly language to set himself apart from the other characters and make him seem higher in the eyes of the audience. Draw Benevolio; beat down there weapons. Romeo appeals for Benevolios help rather than joining into the fight as the other characters would, again making him stand out from the other violent characters. Romeo often uses poetry in his dialogue while the other characters just seem to insult each other giving him a more placid appearance. Mercutios language differs so extremely which gives an appropriate insight into his character and personality. He has two very different aspects of his personality; the jokey, sociable, lighter side and the aggressive, hateful, darker side. These two sides clash together in his speech creating an odd mixture of jokes and puns against angry curses showing Mercutio is a man at odds with himself, creating an enigma for the audience. In his dying speech he uses a joke even as he dies. No, tis no as deep as a well, nor so wide as a church door. Mercutios main function is to die and cause the fight between the two families to flare up again and to get Romeo banished. If Romeo wasnt banished then what would happen in the rest of the story? It is also similar to his Queen Mab speech as they are both a heated rant at everything and everyone. This again shows the darker side of Mercutios personality as one moment he can be composed and the next brutal and hostile. With Mercutios demise Romeo finally becomes angry. His language and behaviour change as a result. Contrasting previous actions, where he submitted to Tybalt, Romeo desires to fight him and get retribution. He talks about black fate turning to a very angry form of poetry becoming gentlemanly and violent at the same time. The black fate speech ties in with the prologue and Mercutios A curse on both your houses. Romeos love changes to fury at Tybalt and evens talks about how love has made him soft. O sweet Juliet, Thy beauty hath made me effeminate. Fiery eyed fury be my conduct now! Stating that no more will he back down and allow Tybalt to do as he wants without taking his revenge. Benevolios language show he is telling the truth. He actually describes what has happened for a start and uses lots of adjectives to describe how people acted. Uttered with gentle breathe, calm look, knees humbly bowd. when he talks about Romeo. Unruly spleen. Deaf to peace. to describe Tybalt. Also at the end of his speech he says This is the truth, or let Benevolio die. Indicating that he is confident hes told the truth and is prepared to doe for it. He also describes their deeds in a lot of detail. His agile arm beat down their fatal points. And tot they go like lightning. To again prove hes telling the truth. Compared with Benevolio Lady Capulet is the complete opposite. Some twenty of them fought in this black strife. When only Tybalt, Mercutio and at the end Romeo, who were skirmishing which she didny even witness. And all those twenty but could take one life. She talks about how twenty of them could scarcely kill Tybalt and also draws attention away from the fact Tybalt killed Mercutio, trying to manoeuvre the situation to her own advantage. The actions of the Prince prove that fate (and Shakespeare) has decided that Romeo must live. Immediately we do exile him hence. If he was executed there would be no plot and the play would just end. A pair of star crossed lovers take their life. If the prince had Romeo killed then the fight between the Montagues and Capulets would just escalate and Romeo and Juliet wouldnt be able to commit suicide and end the fighting. In conclusion Shakespeares language elevates the atmosphere with Mercutios cocky jokes, Tybalts nasty insults, Romeo poetry, Benevolios truthfulness, Lady Capulets lies and the Princes final decision. All this fits together to escalate the fighting and keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The language makes each character seem like real people to the audience who can then empathise with them s a result. This is what made Romeo and Juliet such a success, Shakespeare knew how to make the audience believe it was real and get the audience shouting in the fight scenes and crying in the death scenes. If the language and the tension were different and it wasnt there then the audience wouldnt be interested and the play would have failed. Shakespeare uses language to play on human emotion.

PEZ essays

PEZ essays PEZ and PEZ dispensers can be found in over 60 countries around the world! This year marks the 50th anniversary of the well-loved candy. The wordPEZ? derives from the German wordPhefferminz? which means quite simply, peppermints. They shortened the name to PEZ taking the first, middle, and last letter of the word to simplify it and keep the name easy to remember. Yes, that's right the original PEZ candies were compressed peppermints, an adult mint made to help quit smoking, and naturally, the first dispenser looked much like a cigarette lighter. A candy man named Edward Haas III first invented them in 1927 in Vienna, Austria. In 1948 they started making PEZ in a neweasy, hygienic dispenser? that we all recognize today as a regular PEZ dispenser. In 1952 Edward Haas brought his idea to America and did extensive research with his products and the way children had grown attached to them. They then placed heads on the dispensers and marketed them for children. The first dispensers with heads were a robot, Popeye, and Santa. It was in that year that the first fruit flavored PEZ was introduced. The first flavors were cherry, lemon, orange, and strawberry. Currently the United States flavors are orange, lemon, strawberry, and grape. Until a few years ago there was no grape, but it replaced cherry, which the candy company thought reminded children of cough syrup. However cherry PEZ is still available in Canada. In Spain they sell apple and raspberry flavored PEZ, and in Hungry or Thailand they have chocolate! Another rare PEZ flavor was calledKosher? which was designed to comply with Jewish dietary laws. Some other long gone PEZ flavors include chlorophyll, cinnamon, coffee, eucalyptus, flower, licorice, menthol, lime, IZO (vitamin enriched), and anise. These flavors weren't popular enough when introduced to keep producing them. In 1973 PEZ then built their United States plant that is located in Orange, Ct and in 1...

Australian National Fund Raising Organization Association Essay

Australian National Fund Raising Organization Association - Essay Example Our group will use many techniques to raise funds for our events and they will be discussed below. Our group is planning two separate events in order to raise funds. There are two broad segments of the society that can be used to raise funds. One segment consists of adults of over 35 years of age and the other is the younger segment which comprises of young people from ages 16 to 35. Our group is planning to make use of both these segments to raise money for our fundraiser. For adults, we are planning a dinner reception where they will get a chance to socialize. In the dinner, notable members will be given a chance to say something for the cause of poverty. The dinner reception will be formal as its target market is mature adult people who will be willing to spend their money on donations. Another, often neglected in terms of fundraising, the segment of the society that can contribute to charity is the younger generation. Young people can also play a big role in raising money given that fundraising is done keeping in mind their needs. Our group is planning to hold a party for the younger population in order to raise funds for the poor. We will be selling food, drinks, and other items in the party in order to raise funds. Different techniques will be used to raise funds for both the events. Older and younger people have different demands and perceptions, and it is vital to plan fundraisers accordingly in order to raise sufficient amounts of a fund. In the dinner reception funds will be raised by tickets and donations. People will be sold tickets and they will be communicated that the money we get from the tickets will go to the charity. In the dinner reception, we will also ask people to donate money towards the cause. Speeches will be made to motivate them to raise money. In the dinner reception, we will offer people drinks, appetizers, and dinner so that people have enough time to socialize, and we can raise more and more money. Donations will be our main target because most of the money from tickets will be used to cover expenses that will be incurred in arranging for the venue and dinner for guests.  Ã‚

Assignments Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 3

Assignments - Essay Example The syntactic rule, on the other hand, must always govern a written message so that the reader gets the very meaning that the writer intended to convey. Johnny and Ken, in the course of exchanging words, failed to observe some of these simple rules. The whole conversation, therefore, can be seen as the abuse of language. Johnny opens the talk with an ambiguous statement that gave his roommate a leeway to using any language. Johnny asked, â€Å"Does your friend has to stay here all the time?†(n.pg).In this question, he did not clearly bring out what he meant by that. This was the ambiguous question that led to the conflict. In response to this ambiguity, Ken employed the use of inferential statement. He thought Johnny was already very mad at him and his friend. Therefore, Ken turns furious to counteract the supposed temper of Johnny. Ken replied, â€Å"You said you were chill with it before† (n.pg). This statement also shows that Ken must have used a static evaluation on Johnny. When Johnny had agreed to accommodate the friend earlier, Ken thought that he had made a permanent decision and could not change his mind whats oever. The sudden change of mind took Ken by surprise since he had never expected that from Johnny. There was also lack of euphemism in their tones. Both Ken and Johnny had poor diction. They failed to use pleasant words in place of the blunt ones. For instance, Johnny says â€Å"†¦I don’t like it. I am tired of this! You are the worst† Ken also calls Johnny â€Å"dumb† n.pg. These are emotive statements. If the two had chosen to use polite language (euphemism) on each other, they would have come to an understanding and solve their differences in a smooth way. Johnny, in his first statement, could have avoided ambiguity by politely explaining to Ken why and how his friend had become a burden. Ken could have sat down and listen

The Declaration of Independence and David Simon Essay Example for Free

The Declaration of Independence and David Simon Essay In this essay, I will explain what â€Å"The Declaration of Independence† says about the people’s right to happiness and compare it to David Simon’s essay There Are Now Two Americas. My County is a Horror Show and what he believes about Americans enjoying the same rights. David Simon believed that happiness involves money, land and opportunity. Lastly I will give my opinion on what I believe the right to pursue happiness involves and means. According to the first draft of The Declaration of Independence, people’s rights were being ignored by the King. Thomas Jefferson once said â€Å"mankind is more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed† (Jefferson,1), this is telling us that the people are allowing the corrupt government to take over their life and put them through suffering that they do not deserve or want. â€Å"Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed† (Jefferson, 1), this one ruler mentality also known as absolute monarchy lets the ruler have full control of everything and has no limits on his wishes or power. This type of government allowed the one ruler or king to take away people’s right to be heard, seen and ultimately their happiness. One would think that because they live in the United started of America everybody gets treated equally, but in reality, they are wrong. In David Simon’s essay There Are Now Two Americas. My County is a Horror Show, Simon expresses his view on how Americans are not enjoying the same rights as others and how rich people have taken over the government. Simon also says â€Å"You witnessed it again with the healthcare debacle in terms of the $450m that was heaved into congress† (Simon, 3). He believed that rich people bought the government with their money so they could make more money and be richer. The lower class was always fighting to get basic need services such as healthcare and education. Most were at risk of becoming drug addicts and/or homeless. Many immigrants or citizen just wanted to live the American dream, which is considered the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social  mobility that one will achieve through hard work. David Simon believed that money, land or to have opportunity to live a happy life is not based on money. Simon considers that with a minimum wage salary, a small home and a fair government you will be able to pursue and eventually acquired complete or full happiness. He says that the government has only helped the working class by raising wages and going into war so they can win more land and build more factories. In his essay, Simon says â€Å"It took a working class that had no discretionary income at the beginning of the century, which was working on subsistence wages. It turned it into a consumer class† (Simon, 2). The government has converted our people into working animals that only care about making or earning more money to waste it on unnecessary stuff they like but do not need. The engine that drove them to this gullible mentality was the ability to make money and realizing that they are able to afford everything they want and desire even when this desires are not needed. Having a fair society is being able to have moral choices without jeopardizing happiness. â€Å"Are we all in this together or are we all not?† (Simon, 5), David Simon is asking that as Americans we have to work together as a team to ensure everyone has their basic rights and happiness. He believed that capitalism is a good way of making money but it does not solve moral problems. â€Å"The other thing that was there in 1932, that isn’t there now is that some element of the popular will could be expressed through the electoral process in my country† (Simon, 5), he goes to say this because in 1932 the government bought the elections and the people of America were not able to choose their government. I believe that the right to pursuit happiness involves you speaking up when you feel your unalienable rights are being violated. The key word is pursuit, we all have the right to go after the things we want and what we think will make us happy; but happiness is not guarantee, is just the ability to look for it. Furthermore, happiness is not an entitlement either. We all have the right to take action for our own happiness as long as one’s rights are not being infringed. Unalienable rights are given to all human beings by their creator. It is the government’s responsibility to protect them without violating them. Finally, live life in a manner that you believe will lead you to happiness.

The Good Old Days of the Internet :: Personal Narrative Essay Example

I read an essay about how the web has changed since the good old days. It talked about the beginning of weblogs (aka- blogs), how they used to represent something essential about the web... and now (of course) they've become so common (thanks to programs like Blogger), that their original purpose had been lost. Â   The essay talked about how people who discovered the web recently (like me I suppose), were missing out on the original spirit of the web because commercial sites had overrun everything, and we didn't have true web logs to point us towards the small, personal sites behind the billboards. And on and on... I had a hard time grasping the underlying point of the essay, besides the fact that it sounded like someone talking about how they heard That Band live, back when they were Cool, before they 'Sold Out'. But the idea that somehow the true spirit of the web was now compromised because of big commercial sites seemed a bit strange. Like somehow Nike.com was stealing the soul of geocities.com/my_neighborhood/my_weblog.html. That struck me as BS. Us poor newcomers are apparently being deprived of the 'true' web experience because of commercial sites. Â   I'd almost suggest just the opposite... the peculiar shifts that retail sales have had to undergo in order to do business on the internet have contributed as much to web culture as sites of cool underground links, or tributes to beloved deceased pets. Even the gawd-awful get-rich-quick auto-generated MLM sites and the horrid Free for All links pages are part of the culture of the web. And us newcomers, if we really take interest in this strange alternate universe, can find the odd, underground personal sites if we look. Â   To say that slick corporate sites are ruining the culture of the web would be like saying department stores like Macy's or Bloomingdale's ruined the culture of New York City. By god, NYC should have no commercial enterprise bigger than those those kitschy little kosher delis, family-owned New York pizza shops and Asian groceries. Anything bigger and slicker than that is an outrage. And NYC really has too many poeple now... all these newcomers just don't get it. Their clueless antics are ruining our city's culture. Those obnoxious street performers, and pushy three-card-monte scam artists! To say nothing of the homeless! How uncool are they? Â

Career Choices Essay

Introduction Making the perfect career choice is a lifetime decision that will have a lasting impression on your life and the life of your future family. As we all grow up in life we hear from our parents and mentor’s that if you decide to choose a career that you dislike, you can spend a life time living a miserable lifestyle and your career will have a short life span. In vice-versa, if you find something that you love to do in life and you are  able to make that into a long lasting career. It will seem like you have never worked one day in your life. Throughout time, many working class individuals have chosen to pursue educations in careers that will lead to a future living a stable lifestyle but it is not what their true passions are in life. So they are stuck doing something that they hate in life just because they have to work in order to provide a sufficient lifestyle for themselves and family. Another critical aspect that you must take into consideration when making a career choice is to make a valid consideration on whether you can grow inside of the career decision you make or will you remain static performing one position for the rest of your life. The reason why a lot of individuals choose to go to college is because they are stuck in a dead end job that has no momentum to further gain a promotion or advance in pay. In my opinion, entrepreneurship should be every individual’s long term goal in life. The ultimate decision making factor in choosing a career and working for a prominent company is to get the working experience making mistakes under another companies supervision, so when you begin to start your own company you will already have the experience to make smart business decisions and know how to make your company prosperous. Even though there are a lot of great career choices out there in the world, I believe that a career in either health and wellness or software engineering would be the best fit for me because they will give me the opportunity to grow, both fields are very challenging, and they both will give me the opportunity to prosper and own a private company. 1 The Importance of Having A Software Engineering Technical Career Since the late 1940’s the software engineering field has been growing rapidly as a challenging and profound profession for a lot of software students that would like to inquire skills that helps to maximize the quality and create database software. Since this time excellent software programmers have found ways to improve these components by increasing their speed, security, usability, cost, testability, size, readability, and stability. Engineers have developed business software that have changed the world and has adapted this same concept onto many home computers so consumers can have the same usability as larger corporations from the comfort of their own laptop computer. Computer innovation has evolved greatly since the 1940’s with higher advanced platforms that are able to integrate businesses with consumers easier, through the invention of the World Wide Web. Laptop computers along with tablets have created an easier and more efficient way to access the internet with access to public networks that can be routed from any major hotel or fast food restaurant, and mobile phone technology that has been designed by Mac and Android allow consumers to stay connected to the world from the comfort of a palm sized device. It takes a very talented array of programmers to design these devices and with the world of technology at the forefront of driving innovation; this career field is here to stay. With stability also come growth and business opportunities for talented engineers to step up and continue driving this career field to unknown places. Opportunity For Growth Recently CNN money came out with an article titled â€Å"Best Jobs in America† which had a detailed listing of the top 100 careers in America with great pay and growth potential. It was not a surprise to see software architects at the top of the list at number 1 with a 10 year job growth forecast of 34% beating out other leading career opportunities such as physician assistants coming in at number 2, and management consultant coming in at number 3. CNN has stated, 2 â€Å"Like architects who design buildings, they create the blueprints for software engineers to follow and pitch in with programming too. Plus, architects are often called on to work with customers and product managers, and they serve as a link between a company’s tech and business staffs† (CNN Money, 2010). Making this a well-diversified career field where you get the opportunity to work inside a comfortable office setting but also visit customers at their facilities and help out with customer service issues at remote locations. Along with the exceptional growth potential this career path shares, it also can create amazing entry level financial stability as well as stated in figure 1 below: 10th%| 25th%| 75th%| 90th%| As you advance your experience and expertise in the software engineering career field, programmers have the option to choose a specific craft such as a technical support engineer, C++ software engineer, or lead software engineer where your average annual income can range from $63,000 upwards to $120,000 a year easily based on an individual’s knowledge. The Challenge Even though ultimate career stability along with a great compensation plan and benefits sounds great from the outside looking in we must also understand that with great opportunities also comes a great challenge. Programming in laments terms can be contributed to learning a second language such as 3 Spanish. It takes a lot of dedicated time to perfecting this skill along with training. Depending on your decided expertise there may be a ton of syntax and logical instructions that you have to learn in order to program effectively and unfortunately most of this time is spent outside a classroom or job setting really learning the craft at home on an individual’s personal time. But in a more positive perspective a lot of these languages such as Java, C#, and Visual Basic derive from the parent language of C++ so if you are able to get a great concept for this computing language the others will come fairly efficient for beginning programmers. Another positive aspect to this career field is since there are such high demands for these positions a lot of companies offer entry level programming positions offered to developers that have no experience so this will give individuals the opportunity to work under mid and senior level technicians to learn the ropes. A lot of individuals stray away from challenge, growth, and hard work but this is a career field that awards individuals for hard work, and gives techs the opportunity to learn a new aspect of the business every single day which makes this career field interesting. Below in figure 2 is a progression  chart that shows the career path a software engineer should take in order to become great at their craft and make a nice 6 figure income. Progression chart| A career progression chart generally resembles the one below. It may vary from company to company. | Role| Years of experience| Trainee software engineer| 0-1| Software engineer| 1-2| Senior software engineer| 2-4| System analyst| 3-5| Project leader| 5-8| Figure 2 ExpressComputerOnline.Com career roadmap for software engineers 4 Building A Business One could only imagine that one day a company that was started in your parents garage would evolve and become a multi-billion dollar company that has millions of dedicated customers, and releases innovative products that changes the world every year. Well this is not a dream anymore; it has actually been a reality for major companies such as Google, Apple, and Macintosh which have all started out of garages. The biggest disadvantage the many software developers face when building their own business is they do not have a lot of business experience, but with help from outsourcing agencies such as fog creek which specializes in the development and startup of technology companies they state that â€Å"if you have an innovative product that can compete for market share versus other companies all you have to do is market, sale, price, and hire exceptionally well† (Fog Creek Software, 2011). Which is not an easy process but if you are able to do it effectively your business will have a fair chance of competing in a vastly competitive marketplace. How A Health And Wellness Career Will Create A Great Business Career Individual health and wellness have been in the forefront of the world for many decades now being led by activist groups and government agencies  initiating â€Å"Go Green† marketing campaigns and household tax credits for individuals and homeowners who convert their lifestyles to a more healthy and energy efficient environment. CNN states that health and wellness physicians â€Å"Perform routine care such as physicals and tests, counseling patients, and even prescribing medication, all under a doctor’s supervision. Today’s doctor shortage will only worsen as boomers age and health care reform brings more patients into the system, creating a huge need for this field† (CNN Money, 2010). 5 So even with an aging population this will continue to be a career path that will always be in high demand. Opportunity For Growth On the CNN money web article that was published earlier in the year physician’s assistants that also are in health and wellness practices partake in the number 2 position with a 39% 10 year annual growth forecast. Even though going green and living health is not new in the minds of many Americans a lot of individuals have not accepted the lifestyle thus living in an unhealthy environment. Statistics have shown that just in woman alone â€Å"Recent national data show that 82.1 percent of Black women and 75.7 percent of Hispanic women are overweight or obese compared to 59.5 percent of White women (Ogden, 2012).† This shows that there is still a lot of room for growth in this industry and still barriers to break down before this money making opportunity really explodes. In college classrooms instructors have put a major emphasis on students teaching their patients how their living environments vastly effect there personal health and living an unhealthy personal lifestyle will have a vastly negative effect on their health. With more educators out there pushing the idea and government agencies pushing the effort there is a ton of room for growth in this industry. Health and wellness physicians make a pretty comfortable lifestyle as represented below in figure 3, and it is also pretty fulfilling knowing that you are changing individual lives by helping them improve their health. The Challenge With any career field that is rewarding and has a tremendous opportunity for growth there are some challenges and risk that must be taken into consideration. Just like with the software engineering career path there is a journey that needs to be taken before you have the appropriate authority to recommend patients for certain treatments and products. There was an article posted in the New England Journal by Michael Porter which makes an argument that states, â€Å"By shifting our focus on value, simply defined as quality divided by cost, we can lower costs and improve quality (Porter, 2011)†. So in order to make this a rewarding career path, consumers would have to switch their focus as well which makes this a difficult path to choose. Education will not be a hard factor to fulfill because there are tons of institutions that offer individuals certification opportunities and there was an article on livestrong.com that supports health and wellness professionals that states, â€Å"If you have a passion for health and wellness, sharing your interest can enrich the lives of others as well. College majors in kinesiology or exercise science can teach skills for exercise and wellness careers but may not be required to obtain certifications (Case, 2011).† 7 Building A Business Building a Health and Wellness Company may not be easy but if we are able to get it off the ground and running it does offer a tremendous reward and fulfillment knowing that you are offering individuals great products and services that will change their lives by allowing them to live a healthier fulfilling lifestyle. There are even lots of companies out there in the market today which assist business minded individuals such as Melaleuca in helping individuals start their own health and wellness companies. They provide products along with customer service to those who are small companies and need outsourcing to get started. This helps break down a lot of barriers and makes the transition into entrepreneurship a lot easier. Conclusion Developing a career in software engineering or health and wellness can be very growth orientated, lucrative, and rewarding careers that both give back to the community. Even though there are a lot of great career choices out there in the world, I believe that a career in either health and wellness or software engineering would be the best fit for me because they will give me the opportunity to grow, both fields are very challenging, and they both will give me the opportunity to prosper and own a private company. I was always told in my life that as you begin to mature in life an individual should always have three forms of income coming in which first is a primary income which results from a regular steady job. The second is an alternate income which may result from a part time job or secondary business. While the last form of revenue may result from investing or savings income. My final career choice decision is to pursue software engineering as my primary income since I have dedicated so much time and effort towards learning the craft, and pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems will help me get a great entry level position with a great starting pay. Plus I have a passion for innovation and enjoy the challenge of learning something new every day. Second, I also have a passion for helping others and with the sales background that I currently have it would be an excellent opportunity for me to build a business starting a secondary health and wellness company selling health certified products to homeowners that wish to live a healthy and clean lifestyle. Automation with Ruby NetSSH (Secure Shell)

SSH (or Secure Shell) is a network protocol that allows you to exchange data with a remote host over an encrypted channel. Its most commonly used as an interactive shell with Linux and other UNIX-like systems. You may use it to log into a Web server and run a few commands to maintain your website. It can also do other things, though, such as transfer files and forward network connections. Net::SSH is a way for Ruby to interact with SSH. Using this gem, you can connect to remote hosts, run commands, examine their output, transfer files, forward network connections, and do anything you would normally do with an SSH client. This is a powerful tool to have if you frequently interact with remote Linux or UNIX-like systems. Installing Net::SSH The Net::SSH library itself is pure Ruby--it requires no other gems and doesnt need a compiler to install. However, it does rely on the OpenSSL library to do all the encryption needed. To see if OpenSSL is installed, run the following command. If the Ruby command above outputs an OpenSSL version, its installed and everything should work. The Windows One-Click Installer for Ruby includes OpenSSL, as do many other Ruby distributions. To install the Net::SSH library itself, install the net-ssh gem. Basic Usage The most common way to use Net::SSH is to use the Net::SSH.start method. This method takes the hostname, username and password and will either return an object representing the session  or pass it to a block if given one. If you give the start method a block, the connection will be closed at the end of the block. Otherwise, youll have to manually close the connection when youre finished with it. The following example logs into a remote host and gets the output of the ls (list files) command. Within the block above, the ssh object refers to the open and authenticated connection. With this object, you can launch any number of commands, launch commands in parallel, transfer files, etc. You might also notice that the password was passed as a hash argument. This is because SSH allows for a variety of authentication schemes, and you need to tell it this is a password.
